before you embark on any detox program,
to prevent unwanted surprises.

Now that you understand the meaning of "detoxification", and you probably think you can do with a detox, let's understand a little protocol before we get started.

You need to understand what are involved before you embark on a detox program so that you don't get caught unaware.

WHO Should NOT Embark on a Detox Program?

First of all, you need to know the condition of your own health.  DO NOT attempt a detox program if you are:

  • Under 18 years of age or over 65 years of age

  • Trying to get pregnant, are pregnant, or are breast-feeding your baby

  • Diabetic, have hypoglycemia, suffering from candidiasis, prone to thrush, have yeast infection

  • Feeling under the weather, recovering from an illness, before or after a surgery

  • Following a special diet for any health condition

  • On any kind of medication, in which case you need to first consult your doctor

Do You Need to Detox?

If you don't' fall under any of the categories above, how do you know if you need to detox?  Print out this checklist and check how toxic you are.  If you ticked off at least five "yes", your health is likely to be below par.  The more questions that you answer "yes" to, the more toxic you are likely to be and you will surely benefit from a detox.

This checklist is not meant to diagnose, but just simply to estimate your toxins overload.  Always check with your doctor before you go on any detox program, especially if you are suffering from any health conditions or are on some kind of medication.

WHERE Do You Start?

There are many methods for detoxification.  Each method helps for a certain detoxification organ.  Basically, detoxification should go in this order, although there is no hard and fast rule:

  • Gastrointestinal detox

  • Colon detox

  • Liver detox

  • Kidney / Gallbladder detox

  • Lungs detox

  • Lymphatic system / Skin detox - concurrently

WHEN Do You Start?

You may choose to follow either a quick but strict weekend detox program, or a 1-2 week or longer detox diet program.  But choose a day or a stretch of time when there will be less activities or travel.  It should be a time when you're not too busy both mentally and physically and could devote yourself totally to a proper detox without distractions.

A long weekend is a good time to embark on a short detox program, when you can be completely rested and relaxed.  For a beginner, you may experience some light-headedness or other "healing reactions" so being at home rather than at work will be a good idea.

WHAT Method to Use?

As mentioned, there are many methods for detoxification.  Going on a detox program is not the same as going on a diet.  A detox program is NOT meant to lose weight but is for the cleansing/healing of your body cells.  In the process, you have the benefit of losing some weight through water or fat loss as your cells begin to heal.

A detox program must have a means of ELIMINATING wastes/toxins and followed by a diet that is NOURISHING.  Just remember this when you plan to embark on a detox program that elimination is as important as nourishment.

Examples of elimination methods could be by means of fiber drinks, a colonics, an enema, a skin scrub, sauna, a gallbladder flush, etc.  There are also appropriate foods that are suitable for nourishing different organs.  These will be explained on this site.  Understand each of these and use them to your advantage according to your conditions.

Foods to Avoid

It is very important to prepare your body for a detox program.  3 to 4 days before starting a detox program and well into your detox program, some foods should be avoided.

Although fasting is not required during a detox program, you can make your detox more meaningful if you avoid certain foods.  Here's a list of foods that will hinder your body cleansing and should be avoided/reduced leading to the day you will begin your detox.  During detox, these are best NOT to be consumed in order for your body to do a thorough job of cleansing.  After all, you're into detox to heal, so don't tax it further.

Also read about health robbers that are robbing you of your health. Know WHAT to avoid.

Foods to Take During a Detox Program

There is a wide variety of foods that you can begin to include even from now as you begin to eat healthy.  Get acquainted with this list of healthy foods and begin introducing them to your body bit by bit, especially if you have rarely been eating fresh foods.

These are live and whole foods that are so rich with phytonutrients, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, fiber, complete proteins and essential fatty acids.  Some of these foods help your body to gently detox and are nourishing at the same time.  You should never have to feel hungry and bingeing on the wrong type of food any more.

Healing Crisis

Understand that when you are well into a good detox program, your body will begin to draw out wastes, dumping them into your blood system to be transported for elimination.   This is a constructive progress towards your renewed health and old/damaged tissues are being replaced with new.  A cleansing, purifying process is under way.

As you begin to nourish your body with superior foods, a strong foundation is being built;  the old and unhealthy tissues which are clogged with toxins will have to be released.  These are gradually replaced and you will begin to feel better and better.

There are three stages to go through when you're on your way to getting well:

  • eliminative

  • transitional

  • building

It is at the stage of building where new cellular structure replace the old that the real cure takes place.  You may experience a healing crisis that may last anything between a few hours up to about three days or even longer.  Depending on how lengthy is your detox program, there may be slight to severe pains and discomforts that may  increase, with the severity of your condition.

The crisis may come without warning.  There may be some light headedness, joint pains, weakening of a limb, some skin breakouts, mild nausea, or diarrhea, etc.  If you have some forgotten pains in any part of your body (for example from a bad fall when you were young but you thought have recovered), the pain may resurface at the time of detox as your body brings up this pain for healing.

Welcome these symptoms and DO NOT give up. Your body is going through a regeneration process.  Take this period to rest, as your body recuperates and prepares for better health ahead.  When you know that you're following a proper detox program, you will know that this is the healing stage and there is nothing to be alarmed about.

Be persistent and wait out this period. When these symptoms happen, know that your choice to improve your diet is the right thing to do, and that a renewing is happening within you.  This is completely different from a "disease crisis" where your body works AGAINST it.  In a healing crisis, your body works TOWARDS healing.

A healing crisis usually comes AFTER you feel good, when you are ready.  It is necessary for healing.  Your body was designed by the Creator to self-heal.  It will heal one part at a time and you will see healing moving throughout your body.

Your success starts here, as you understand the process;  you are on the right track to a healthier and new you.

Listen to Your Body

Sometimes when you detox, you may tend to eat less.  Unless you've conditioned your body, you might feel some discomfort with hunger.  When detoxing, it is not about starving your body and depriving it of food, not even in the case of fasting.  Detoxing is about eliminating toxins from your body and at the same time, feeding your body with superior foods for rebuilding of your sick and damaged cells.

I do not recommend water fast or total fast (without food and water) for a prolonged period.  It can be dangerous if you don't know what you are doing and not knowing what to look for when going on such a fast.

Keep a journal on your detox journey.  Write down the foods you're taking, the reactions or healing crisis that you encounter.  When you're hungry during a detox program, reactions or healing crisis may be amplified, so watch this.  Keep healthy fresh and whole foods in sufficient stock when embarking on a program.

Listen to your body, learn to differentiate whether the pains are from a diseased state or from a healing crisis.

Follow-up After a Detox Program

When you complete a detox program, you would want to begin to work toward the "right way" of eating that is nourishing and toxin-free.  Your body feel good, you feel healthy, you want to keep it that way.  Yes, occasionally you want to indulge in that rich chocolate fudge, by all means if you know what to do after that.

Most people cannot keep up with a healthy food regimen and may slack.  This is when I suggest that you begin to change your eating habits gradually. Most importantly, understand how toxic or harmful the foods you're eating really are.  Slowly eliminate poor choices of food, one at a time.  It doesn't happen overnight but it can be changed.  I know because I've been there and you WILL come through.
